“Now he's gone and joined that stupid club"
Let us be honest, the age of rock music as we knew it is over, no longer do legendary bands like Nirvana or The Doors dominate the charts, but pop artists like Ariana Grande and The Weeknd. Nevertheless, rock music has left a fat imprint on the direction of the industry, and remains to be a genre that inspires artists of all inclinations and pursuits
As I like to say good music is good music, regardless of what time-period it comes from. And people recognise this. Great artists in their own resect, like XXXTentacion paying tribute to Nirvana or Joey Bada$$ sampling Jimi Hendrix.
Jimi was known as an icon for the revolutionary counter-culture of the late 1960s, which was all about taking various drugs and listening to psychedelic music.
Tragically the drugs were his demise, and on September 18th, 1970, the pioneer died of asphyxia while intoxicated with barbiturates.
The 27 Club itself is a cultural phenomenon, and realistically speaking probably just a statistical spike and (mostly) a coincidence due to the reckless and drug-filled lifestyle led by some of the most high-profile celebrities of their time.
This lifestyle had a lot of causes, one of the most prevalent being the too-quick rise to fame and increasing seclusion from their peers, because they were suddenly of a “higher” status. Paired along with the judgmental gaze of the public criticising every one of their moves. Drugs very often became an escape for these artists, to a world where they could feel a little more normal and finally relax.
This, however, is obviously not a good thing and I dare to say that we might have kept some of these incredible minds for a while longer if they were not gripped so strongly by their addictions.
Kurt Cobain has been a massive inspiration in my creative pursuits. His boundary-breaking music has influenced many people in the past and will continue to influence many in the future.
During the last three years of his life, he had openly struggled with depression and heroin addiction, and on the 5th of April 1994, Kurt took his own life.
His death marked not only the end of the band Nirvana but the wild grunge era of the '90s
I have created the collection because I realised that a lot of my music idols are joined together by being a part of the same “club”. It gave me a way of expressing my excitement about their music by creating something from their style and image. So far, we have created t-shirts inspired by Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Amy Winehouse. (Although I still really want to make a Jim Morrison t-shirt)
For some recommendations please listen to the Nirvana album "In Utero". Yes this is alot better then the often overhyped Nevermind. It was recorded along with the legendary producer Steve Albini (Shellac) who was famous for being a recording purist. He brought out the most raw version of Nirvana for the album, the way it was meant to be heard.
The series is not intended to offend people, but instead to raise awareness of the importance of mental wellbeing, as well as the dangers of drug misuse.
Amy Winehouse was an exceptional talent, whose incredible music left a mark on the world, and will continue to inspire generations
The singer had long struggled with alcoholism, and her wild and too-brief career was tragically cut short on July 23, 2011, when the soul singer died of alcohol poisoning.
